推荐这部1970年的《和谐家庭》时，不妨把它和同期《德古拉》《科学怪人》那些哥特怪物片放在一起看：弗雷迪·弗朗西斯没有让吸血鬼或狼人登场，而是把恐怖塞进英格兰郊野的客厅里。新来的家庭女教师渐渐发现，孩子们眼神空洞，墙上挂满怪异的圣像画，而父亲对“外界污染”的恐惧近乎病态。导演没用一惊一乍的廉价吓人，而是靠家庭聚餐、午后茶歇这些日常场景慢慢渗透恐惧，仿佛你家隔壁就住着这么一户“模范家庭”。这片子节奏很慢，但特别会营造那种让人坐立不安的压抑感，像家里明明有猫腻，却没人敢说破。家庭成员之间的眼神交流越来越怪，好像每个人都藏着同一桩秘密，又好像有谁早已不是原来那个“人”。帕特·海伍德演的女管家最瘆人，明明在笑，眼神却像在量你的骨架子。

But they may have met their match in New Friend, their latest victim, who starts to manipulate the foursome, setting one against the other.　　Bizarre combination of late sixties avant garde and sleaze. Director Freddie Francis had made horrors for both Hammer and Amicus but this is nothing like any of them. Shot on location with an atmosphere mixing playground horror and conservatory theatre that is downright weird and unsettling. The great lost girl of sixties British horror, Vanessa Howard, shines as she does in those other rarely seen gems Corruption [1967] and What Became of Jack and Jill [1972]. If Harold Pinter had made The Texas Chain Saw Massacre [1974] for the BBC this could have resulted. Excellent and unique.
